I recently told my husband that I had cheated on him. I explained that I had gotten drunk with a friend and that friend took advantage of me without my consent. My husband admitted that he did not believe me and has not trusted me for our entire marriage(2 years). We have gone to one marriage counseling session. I just don’t know if he is committed to changing and our relationship or if we are going to go to counseling and end up divorced either way. I feel like counseling gets my hopes up but then he is so distant and angry that I lose that hope. I just would like to know how long it will take and if we can make it through this and build trust, love, and a happy marriage.

Infidelity, accidental or not causes a lot of problems. He probably has images of you will this other man torturing his thoughts constantly. It’s more problematic if he had problems trusting you to begin with. Be honest with him and tell him how you feel and listen to him when he shares his feelings. It will take the both of you to get through this… to make it work. It will be a long hard road. If you two truly love one another you won’t give up. But like I said you can’t make it work on your own. He needs to be on board. All you can do is try.

HI, Ksand27,

Trust is such a tricky thing. It takes so long to earn it and can be lost so quickly.

Firstly, one counseling session is not going to be of much benefit. If you feel comfortable with the counselor, I suggest that you continue. If not, find another. Did he go willingly?

You need to have some frank conversations with your husband and ask him directly what you would need to do to regain his trust. You should not be in a marriage that has no trust. He needs to be wiling to move away from his anger and work toward repairing the relationship.

We’re here to help you if you want to discuss further.
