Hi LifeCoachNova. It’s tax day and I am a little bit nervous about money. Everything is ok now, but I am having trouble thinking about “what if the worst” happens with the economy. What should I do? |

Hi DrKathy. This is likely a stressful day for many. When situations arise that are difficult to control and predict, like the current state of the economy, fear steps in adding stress and anxiety. “What if the worst happens?” is an example of catastrophic thinking, blowing fear larger than life to consume thoughts and paralyze possible solutions. Second, focus on what you can control and let go of what you cannot. Focusing on the factors you are able to influence will add a sense of competency lowering your anxiety. Third, pay attention to your self talk. If your financial situation is ok right now, what a blessing. Focus your thoughts on hopeful, positive, self-affirming statements. “I will get through this. I’m ok. Everything will work out.” Positive self-talk is a powerful tool anyone can use. Watch how your emotions shift to feel lighter and more confident with a few meaningful, self-affirming statements. Finally, see the “bigger picture” of life. While times are difficult right now, you still have the ability to live, love, laugh, and experience joy. Focus on the simple experiences that bring you joy to lift you up out of fear. Surround yourself with support and care. We will get through this together. |
